Beyfortus Antibody for RSV Prevention
Beyfortus is a new antibody for the prevention of RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) in infants born during, or entering their first, RSV season, and for children up to 24 months of age who have specific underlying medical conditions. It can be given as early as 1 week of age. Infants and young children are most susceptible to RSV.
RSV is a virus that infects the sinuses and small air passages of the lungs. In mild cases it causes cold symptoms, but a significant number of infants and young children can develop more severe symptoms including a severe cough, wheezing, labored breathing, and low blood oxygen levels. It is estimated that 1 in 56 (1.8%) healthy infants are hospitalized with RSV during their first year of life; about 1 in 18 infants hospitalized with RSV will require treatment in the ICU.
Beyfortus (nirsevimab) is a monoclonal antibody that blocks RSV infection- it is NOT a vaccine. In clinical trials, Beyfortus reduced hospitalization by 75% and prevented the need for ICU care by 90%. It is estimated to prevent one physician office visit per 17 infants, one emergency room visit per 46 infants, and one hospital admission per 128 infants.
Beyfortus is given as a single injection which is effective for 5 to 6 months. It should be administered at the beginning of, or during the RSV season which typically begins in October and ends in March. It can be given as early as 1 week of age. Common side effects include redness and swelling at the injection site and a mild rash. A rare but life threatening allergic reaction has been reported with similar types of medications.
Beyfortus will be available Fall 2024; the estimated cost is $500-$600. When Beyfortus becomes available we will require full payment at the time of administration and then we will file with your insurance for coverage. There is typically a 12-18 month period from the time a new medication is introduced until it will be covered by insurance companies. If we receive payment that covers our expenses, you will receive a full refund from us. If insurance does not cover our full cost, you will receive a refund of the covered cost minus a $50 administration fee.
