Beyfortus Antibody for RSV Prevention

There is a new product for the prevention of RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) for infants born during, or entering their first, RSV season and for children up to 24 months of age who have specific underlying medical conditions.

RSV is a virus that infects the sinuses and small air passages of the lungs. Infants and young children are most susceptible to more severe illnesses. In mild cases, it causes cold symptoms but a significant number can develop more severe symptoms including a severe cough, wheezing, labored breathing, and low blood oxygen levels. It is estimated that 1 in 56 infants, or 1.8% of healthy infants are hospitalized with RSV during their first year of life. About 1 in 18 infants hospitalized with RSV will require treatment in the ICU.

Beyfortus (nirsevimab)is a new product for RSV prevention. Beyfortus is a monoclonal antibody that blocks RSV infection; It is not a vaccine. It is effective for 5 to 6 months and should be given at the beginning or during the RSV season, which typically begins in October and ends in March. In clinical trials, Beyfortus reduces hospitalization by 75% and prevented the need for ICU care by 90%. It is estimated to prevent one doctor visit per 17 infants, one emergency room visit per 46 infants and one hospital admission per 128 infants.

Beyfortus is given as a single injection at the beginning or during the active RSV season and can be given as early as 1 week of age. Common side effects include redness and swelling at the injection site, and a mild rash. A rare but life threatening allergic reaction has been reported with similar types of medications.

Beyfortus is expected to be available this Fall 2023. Estimated cost is $500-$600. There is typically a 12-18 month period before insurance companies cover new medications. When Beyfortus becomes available, we will require full payment at the time of administration. We will file with your insurance for coverage. If we receive payment that covers our expenses, then you will receive a full refund. If insurance does not cover our cost then you will recive a refund on the diffences minus a $50 administration fee.
