Adolescent Physical Exams Richardson,TX
The transition from childhood to young adulthood is a period of rapid, complex change. An adolescent physical exam is fundamentally different from a standard pediatric check-up, shifting focus to the specific health and emotional needs of teenagers in our Richardson and Plano communities. It establishes a critical health baseline and provides a confidential setting to discuss issues they may not bring up anywhere else.
Our role is to monitor your teen’s health through this transformation. Since 1991, Dr. John Porter has operated from the same office on North Floyd Road, building a long-standing medical home for local families. We are not a high-volume clinic; we are a dedicated, small practice that provides consistency and a familiar face, whether your child attended Arapaho Classical Magnet, is now at Richardson High School, or anywhere in between.
More Than a Sports Physical: Navigating the Teen Years
While we complete countless school physical forms, our goal is to address the whole person. This is a critical time for monitoring physical and emotional development.
Tracking Pubertal Development: We monitor growth spurts and assess pubertal development using the Tanner scale to ensure everything is progressing as expected. We also perform baseline screenings for conditions like scoliosis, anemia, and vision issues that can emerge during the teen years.
Mental and Emotional Health Screening: The pressures on teens today are immense. We screen for anxiety, depression, and stress, recognizing that Dallas County has one of the highest rates of untreated youth major depressive episodes in Texas. This visit provides a private forum for your teen to speak directly with Dr. Porter or Dr. Galloway.
Discussing Local Health Risks: We offer evidence-based guidance on topics that are real threats in our community. Richardson ISD has issued specific warnings about the rise of cannabis use and the alarming local trend of fentanyl being found in street drugs. We discuss these risks, along with safe driving and sexual health, in a non-judgmental way.
Your Partner for Richardson ISD Athletics and UIL Forms
For many teens at J.J. Pearce, Berkner, Lake Highlands, and Richardson High School, the annual physical is driven by the need to participate in UIL sports. We are deeply familiar with the required paperwork and exam protocols.
Our physicals satisfy the RISD requirements, which include the Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation form, Concussion Acknowledgement, and Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness form. We ensure all necessary documentation is completed correctly so your student-athlete can join their team without delay. The exam itself verifies that your teen is healthy enough for strenuous activity, checking heart, lung, and musculoskeletal function.
What Makes Adolescent Annual Physical Exams Different?
As children mature, their healthcare and routine physical exam needs change. The annual physical for a teen shifts focus to address specific topics relevant to young adults, emphasizing independence, preventative care, and overall wellness.
A Focus on Physical Health and Emotional Well-being
This is a critical period for both body and mind. We create a safe space to ensure your teen is thriving in all aspects of their life.
- Understanding Physical Changes: We monitor growth spurts and pubertal development, conduct developmental screenings, and screen for chronic conditions like scoliosis and other concerns that emerge during the teen years. We also provide guidance on nutrition and healthy activity levels to support an adolescent's changing body.
- Mental Health Support: We understand the pressures of school, social media, and peer relationships. A key part of every adolescent physical is a confidential screening for anxiety, depression, and stress. We provide a trusted outlet for teens to discuss their mental health and develop healthy coping skills.
Promoting Healthy Independence
A vital part of this visit is empowering teens to take an active role in their own health. This entire medical examination is a chance for them to build confidence.
- Confidential Conversation: We provide time and care for your teen to speak one-on-one with the pediatrics doctor. This privacy is essential for building trust and allows them to ask sensitive questions they might not feel comfortable asking in front of a parent.
- Guidance on Tough Topics: We offer non-judgmental, evidence-based counseling on important safety topics, including the dangers of vaping and substance use, safe driving, and responsible choices about sexual health.
Preparing for the Future
We also use this time to help your teen prepare for the next steps in their life, providing specialized pediatric services that look ahead.
- College and Sports Physicals: We can complete the necessary school physical forms for college admission or sports participation. Our comprehensive school physicals meet the requirements for all types of activities.
- Required Immunizations: We ensure your teen is up-to-date on all vaccinations. A complete checkup immunization review is part of our standard of care in pediatrics, and we also discuss immunizations nutrition to support their overall health. You can see our full approach to vaccinations here.
Our Client Reviews
Our Approach: An Independent Practice Serving Richardson Since 1991
In a landscape of large healthcare networks, our practice remains intentionally small and independent. Dr. Porter has been a fixture in the community for over 30 years, offering a level of continuity that larger institutions cannot match. Dr. Galloway joined the practice in 2012, bringing experience from the Children's Medical Center Dallas emergency department. This stability means you see the same physicians who know your family's history.
We accept new patients and offer access to medical records and results through the MyChart patient portal.
