WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF AUTISM?

Emotional Health

A child's emotional health is just as important as their physical health. Building resilience and strong coping skills starts early.

  • Create Routines: Consistent schedules provide a sense of stability and security.

  • Encourage Open Dialogue: Make time to listen without judgment and ask open-ended questions.

  • Model Healthy Behavior: Show your children how to express frustration and anger in a calm, constructive way.

Acknowledge Their Feelings: Validate their emotions to teach them that their feelings are important.

Fitness & Nutrition

Developing healthy habits early sets the stage for a lifetime of fitness and overall wellness.

  • Balanced Diet: Focus on providing a variety of nutrient-dense foods, including lean proteins, colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.
  • Limit: Aim to reduce added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium in your child's diet.
  • Stay Active: Children ages 6-17 should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Make it fun by going on family walks, bike rides, or playing in the park.

Car Seat Safety

Proper car seat use is one of the most important things you can do to protect your child.

  • Rear-Facing is Safest: Keep your child in a rear-facing car seat for as long as possible, until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by the seat’s manufacturer.
  • Forward-Facing with Harness: Once they outgrow the rear-facing seat, use a forward-facing seat with a harness and tether.
  • Booster Seats: Use a booster seat until the vehicle's lap-and-shoulder belt fits properly—typically when they are 4 feet 9 inches tall.
  • Back Seat is Best: All children under age 13 should ride in the back seat.

Sleep Habits

Adequate sleep is crucial for a child’s physical and mental health and development, mood, and ability to learn.

  • Recommended Sleep (including naps):

    • Infants (4-12 months): 12-16 hours

    • Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours

    • Preschool (3-5 years): 10-13 hours

    • School-Age (6-12 years): 9-12 hours

    • Teens (13-18 years): 8-10 hours

  • Tips for Better Sleep: Establish a consistent and relaxing bedtime routine, keep the bedroom cool and dark, and turn off all electronic devices at least one hour before bed.

Dangers of Tobacco and Nicotine Products

The use of e-cigarettes (vapes) and other tobacco products poses a serious health issues to children and teens.

  • Nicotine is Highly Addictive: It can harm adolescent brain development, which continues until about age 25.

  • Harmful Chemicals: The aerosol from e-cigarettes is not harmless water vapor; it contains harmful and potentially cancer-causing chemicals.

  • Health Risks: Vaping can lead to lung damage and may increase the risk of anxiety and depression.
